Do we rent a house or flat, or do we buy?
We’ve pretty much been renters since we met. We have a history of renting privately and building up trust with a landlord / landlady, rather than through agencies and middle men. We’ve been on the move, having to regularly upsize according to our growing life requirements over the last few years (marriage, children, pets). This constant moving seems to be just a part of who we are. If we’re too comfortable, between the two of us, we don’t feel like we’re growing, or achieving anything.
And we have always said that it allows us to easily “up sticks and leave” a place.
A lot of people have told us that renting is dead money. And to them, it probably is. But we are happy with our lot in life and renting has always suited us and our lifestyle.
One of the things we have to consider is, what happens if things go wrong. What happens if I lose my job and we need an escape rope? What if we decide we hate it? Having an investment / property in France might not necessarily help us get back in a quick timeframe.
In the end, it was an easy decision to make. I’ll be honest, I’m not even sure we even considered buying at all.
Our preference was to look for a rental, and to help facilitate the move, we were looking for a fully furnished house or flat that we could easily move our lives into and get settled in France quickly.
